Mary I loved reading this and it make me think back to the Great Fires in Yellowstone (in the 70s or maybe the 80s I can't recall exactly) when I was very relieved to find out that the Lodge-pole Pines NEEDED fire for their seeds to germinate. Apparently the seeds are wrapped inside resin and unless there's a fire the resin keeps the seeds trapped. I'm no botanist so my explanation is probably way too basic but I know that it made me feel that there was good to come from the awful fires.
