The Flowers ARE Speaking—to All of Us
Everyone can connect with the natural world—yes, including YOU!
Make no mistake, communicating with flowers and plants is a RADICAL act. Neighbors, family, and probably many of your friends, look at you with a “there they go again” dismissive smirk when you start talking about your lavender plants—how the lavender knew you felt upset when you walked into the garden. More than once, you share, you have noticed them emitting so much more fragrance than usual, when you are worried or angry. How you found yourself sitting with the lavender, sharing your troubles, and how they helped you calm down.
Your friends might have been with you up to this point, affectionately calling you a crazy plant lady or some other endearment, until you told them how the lavender shared a message with you and changed your whole outlook. How they helped you create more space in your heart, and in that space, how you received a new realization, a new way of perceiving your problem, that you knew came from the lavender and not from yourself. Perhaps you heard a message, but most likely it simply arose as a knowing, like a grandmother whispering to you in your dream. And how you felt more alive than you had in a long time.
Not that long ago, these ways of interacting with plants were as common as calling your grandmother or texting a friend are today. It was something our ancestors did as easily as they talked with their favorite family pet. They knew the plant that caught their attention often had a message or medicine for them. Today we still know that animals can sense our emotions. Well, plants can too.
The scientific revolutions over the past several hundred years and the resulting elevation of the logical mind over other forms of knowing, such as our heart and intuitive senses, have limited our viewpoint to a very human centric way of seeing our world. Plants especially, being so different than our animals ways of being, were largely relegated to only being a resource for food and medicine. We have forgotten how they are our elders with much wisdom to share.
Today, our relationship with plants is coming full circle because there are now many botanists in the scientific community that are finally studying plant intelligence in earnest. Many popular science books are being published, such as The Light Eaters, by Zoë Schlanger, that gather the latest findings and encourage us to expand our understanding of these beings that we share our world with. The science helps put our minds at ease so that we do not feel like we are crazy, and allows us to move on to the hard work of lubricating the rusty joints of our intuition. It is imperative that we no longer dismiss our imagination and intuitive senses, because these are the bridges that open the doors to connecting us with the vastly different ways the plants experience the world.
In workshops for several years now, I have walked people through the process I use to open my heart and hear messages from the flowers, and each time, every single person has received guidance and been awed and amazed. From this experience, I know that everyone can connect with flowers and plants if they desire to do so. It is not a special gift like being a medium for the dead, or being able to hear colors and see music, (something called synesthesia.) It simply requires a desire, a willingness, to open one’s heart to the flowers.
And the flowers tell me it is critically important for the future of our planet that we once again revere all of nature as alive and sacred, as our ancestors once did. This is how we find our way into a new garden—regaining and creating a new garden of eden—one that moves us forward into more collaborative ways of cohabiting on this planet with all Life.
For today though, we start small, by connecting with one flower, one picture of a flower, or even one memory of a flower, in any way we can. I invite you to join me in this conversation—in my workshops, here on Substack, or on FB or IG. I love hearing about your encounters with your flowers!
I am offering a new five-week workshop, Guidance from the Flowers: Germinating Winter Wisdom, starting Wednesday January 15th, 2025, offered from 7:30 to 9:00pm Eastern. Participants are limited to 20 people.
The flowers invite us to dream with them, entwining the seeds of their becoming with our own. Winter will be a POWERFUL time to connect with the flowers as we explore germinating together and what wisdom they are offering to us.
In this live zoom-based five-part workshop, we will connect with the ancient wisdom of the flowers by exploring our entwined evolutionary love story, learn about their radical intelligence so different from our own, and empower ourselves to use our intuition and imagination to hear their messages.
Through stories, science and shared experiences we will explore how flowers are the elders who midwifed us into this world and want to nurture us still. Together we will gently, slowly, and convincingly step into their world and begin to understand what the flowers have to share with us when we shift from talking about flowers in third person to welcoming them into our conversations as respected elders.

Thank you for this post! About about 7 years ago I noticed I could feel a pull when I walked by my orchids and they needed water. Also noticed how when I watered my tomato plants they gave off scent, and how sagebrush releases floods of scent into the air after a much needed desert rain; a scent of joyous celebration. These things got my attention and put me into a state of receptivity, which continues to deepen my relationships with plants and the natural world in general. They are magnificent teachers especially for those of us who tend to have very busy Minds. I love the work you're doing. One day we will talk about the other beings on this planet as our kin, not as lesser beings here for our use. Happy new year!
It’s so lovely to “meet” other Plant Spirit Medicine Workers. Thank you! 🙏
